Description
In 1948, #WoodyGuthrie wrote the lyrics to #Deportees to call out racist and dismissive attitudes towards the plight of immigrant and migrant workers and their families, often dehumanizing them in conversation and news coverage. His friend, #PeteSeeger proceeded to add these lyrics to a musical interpretation that has since been covered by the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and many others.
The theme of the song resonates today to all those who understand the importance of speaking truth to power and honoring so many traditions of diversity that have strengthened our collective nation.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
