On January 15th, 2006, in the heart of Baghdad, John “Shrek” McPhee — the man notoriously called the Sheriff of Baghdad — led a Delta Force team into one of the most dangerous stretches of the war.
McPhee’s path to that night spanned decades of elite service. He started as an infantryman, earned his place in the 75th Ranger Regiment, advanced to Green Beret, and ultimately into 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta — Delta Force. He’d fought in the mountains of Tora Bora during the early days of the War on Terror and conducted high-risk singleton missions — operating alone and deep behind enemy lines — gathering intelligence and striking targets without a net.
By the time he reached Iraq, McPhee was a master of direct action, counterterrorism, and urban warfare. That night, under cover of darkness, his unit ghosted through Baghdad’s back alleys, switching vehicles, blending into the chaos of a city at war. Their target: a safehouse on Haifa Street, an insurgent stronghold infamous for sniper fire and ambushes.
An explosive breach ripped the door from its hinges. McPhee was first inside, clearing rooms in seconds while his team secured detainees and seized weapons, cash, and cell phones. By sunrise, the intel pulled from that house was already driving the next wave of raids, keeping the enemy on the run.
It was one of countless precision strikes in McPhee’s relentless campaign — the kind of work that dismantles networks, reshapes battlefields, and cements a legacy built in the shadows.
