Sabaton frontman Joakim Brodén joins me for an epic chat ahead of the band’s September 2025 Australia & New Zealand tour and the release of their 11th studio album Legends (out October 17 via Better Noise Music).

We cover everything from tour setlists and why fans won’t quite get the “full European Sabaton experience” (budget and tanks don’t mix well with Aussie flight schedules) — to the Great War era tracks making a return, and which new songs from Legends might sneak into the set.

Joakim opens up about Sabaton’s unique songwriting process, revealing that for the first time in their 25-year history, every band member contributed to an album’s creation. We dive into the challenges of listening to songs you’ve worked on for months without obsessing over tiny flaws, and why some tracks he’d happily retire from the setlist (yes, “Swedish Pagans” gets a mention).

We also discuss Sabaton’s transformation from a band into a full-on historical storytelling machine — with music, videos, films, and even a video game in the works. Joakim shares stories about fans inspired to study history because of Sabaton’s music, plus his thoughts on Aussie fans’ ongoing campaign for a song about the infamous Emu War (spoiler: April Fool’s Day might be your best shot).
