Description
It was playwright Geroge Bernard Shaw who is credited with first uttering this famous truism...but, in Australian political circles, it will always be remembered as Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser's most famous (or infamous) quote.
In 1981, The Barrow Creek Boys seized the chance to capitalise on the publicity which surrounded the quote, and turn it into song.
In doing so, they scored a surprise hit in Brisbane, where it reached # 35 on the charts, largely due to airplay by 4KQ which, at the time, had a country music format.
The Barrow Creek Boys were, in fact, Barry Carozzi and Phil McGuire.
They met while Barry was travelling around Australia...started busking in Darwin, then moved on down the Sturt Highway to Alice Springs, where they scored a pub gig.
On the way south, they would have passed through a tiny dot on the map called Barrow Creek, which I imagine, prompted them to adopt the name for their act.
These days, Barry Carozzi is a Melbourne academic and blogger...don't know about Phil McGuire, though.
In 2001, Barrow Creeek hit the headlines when Peter Falconio was murded just north of the settlement.
This track was originally released by the tiny Outback Records label, but was picked up for national distribution by Astor Records...it was issued on an Astor 45, MA7463.
This upload is from the Astor 45.
